The RPF Chairman, President Paul Kagame has said that Rwanda’s prosperity and transformation will greatly depend on a unity of purpose between the citizens and the leadership.
The Head of State was speaking in Rongi, in Muhanga District during the celebrations to mark the Liberation Anniversary 24 years after the RPF-Inkotanyi liberated the country and stopped the Genocide against the Tutsi.
The Chairman said that as the government seeks to improve the lives of citizens across the country, the main aim is to enable them is to create a foundation to transform their lives.
During the celebration, he presided over the inauguration of two model villages, which were built and completed this year at the tune of Rwf19.2billion benefiting about 68 families in Muhanga (Rongi Sector) and Ngororero districts respectively.
The houses which will benefit vulnerable citizens in the area, were all built by Rwanda Defence Force.
“We want to see those who were given homes prosper. You should not expect government to take care of all your needs. The next step should not be helping the same people over and over but to move on to helping others,” he said.
“We are not building to see it falling apart in a year. Giving citizens a home is about providing a foundation build on and transform your lives. It is not about citizens becoming eternally dependent on government,” he added.
He called for a spirit of unity and cooperation between citizens and government saying that it would greatly sustain the pace of transformation.
Citing an example of the liberation struggle, he said that it was through cooperation and unity that the efforts bore fruits.
“The liberation struggle on the battlefield succeeded because those who were fighting worked with citizens. It is this spirit of unity that we want to maintain to transform this country,” Kagame said.
He called on the general public to take lessons from the country’s history to be able to build the much desired brighter future.
“The historical facts that took place in this place that led to losing the people of this country are part of our bad history. It is our history and we cannot run away from it but we can learn from it and build a better future,” the President said in reference to the Ndiza region.
